Lets Talk About Synthetic Fragrances.
Do you ever walk by those wonderful stores that I shall not name (I’ll be nice)…and smell all those wonderful candles, body wash, hand soaps... see a sale sign and RUN to the cash register? Smells SO GOOD right? And trust me I get it because I used to be a huge candle hoarder because they were smelled so delicious in my home. But that delicious smell is actually Synthetic Fragrances.
What does "Synthetic Fragrance" mean and why is it such a big deal you ask?
Synthetic fragrances are mixtures of synthetic and dangerous chemicals to make up a specific scent. You find these in perfume, hair products, makeup, baby products, and lotions. Etc. However, they are hidden on ingredient list labels because they are listed as "Fragrance" on everyday products and jars that we use in our household and over 3000+ chemicals are being absorbed, inhaled and ingested into our body every single day. More than 95 percent of the chemicals in synthetic fragrances are derived from petrochemicals. These chemicals include: benzene derivatives, aldehydes, phthalates, and a slew of other known toxins that are capable of causing cancer, birth defects, kidney damage, hormone imbalances, nervous-system disorders and allergies—some of which are cited on the EPA’s hazardous waste list.
Anyone who knows me well, knows that I’ve suffered with allergies and vertigo for as long as I can remember, I woke up every day super congested, seriously I’d have a sneeze attack for a good 8-10 sneezes, respiratory issues, skin irritations; I would get contact dermatitis from makeup, cleansers, laundry detergent and not once did I think about what could be causing it I just assumed “well I have sensitivities it is what it is". This was something that I just always thought I’d have to live with, I saw an ENT specialist for my allergies and vertigo issues and nothing could be answered as to why I was having these symptoms. So I took allergy pills and Gravol EVERY morning like it was my daily vitamins. It was extremely frustrating not having answers, but this became my lifestyle.
I didn’t think to look into my household and personal care products because the society we live in advertises products all over TV and social media that say “clean” or “natural” or “pure” and no one tells us differently so we think “oh wow this is amazing” and use it without even thinking to look up the ingredient, let alone understand what they are or mean.
Last year when I became a new Mom, I started a blog as a creative outlet as something for me. I was approached by a huge company for collaboration and without even thinking...I jumped to the opportunity, I mean this could be huge right? Once I posted about the product a friend of mine messaged me just giving me a heads up about some of the lawsuits this company had faced and I instantly felt terrible. Was I a “terrible” mother for not being aware of this? No of course not-but this is how I felt. I started researching and looking into the brand and was shocked at what information was in front of me, accessible to anyone who wanted it but yet we have this shield over our eyes that keeps us from seeing the scary in the world and it's unfortunate because some of these families have faced intense health problems for not only their children but even their own health.
I instantly wanted to make sure I was providing a safer home for my son and a healthy lifestyle for Matt and us as his parents. This isn’t just with food.... our skin is the largest organ in our body, don’t you want to protect it from harmful toxins and chemicals that can be ingested and absorbed so easily and could be causing internal damage? I sure do.
How do I avoid Synthetic Fragrances?
We are all in this generation that is labeled as the "wellness" generation. We all want to eat organic and avoid hormones and GMOS, we want to eat grass fed meat, farm raised eggs and make sure we take our supplements.....but why are we not paying attention to the ingredients that are on our nutrition labels and personal care products, perfumes and air fresheners, and most of all our cleaning products. These ALL contain "fragrance" which is absorbed into our bloodstreams through our skin.
Some of the most common products you may not think could be dangerous are things as simple as: Perfume, Makeup, Dryer sheets, Laundry detergent, Air freshener, Baby products, Hair sprays, Baby Wipes--Even when a product says "fragrance free" they still contain certain ingredients that are masking the smell of the chemicals which is STILL a fragrance.
The key is to READ your labels friends! If you’re unsure of an ingredient or what it is exactly, I highly suggest downloading the https://www.thinkdirtyapp.com/-- it lets you scan your items or look them up and gives you a detailed rating/lists what ingredients it has that can be dangerous to your nervous system. It really opened my eyes as to why I was feeling the symptoms I had been for years and why my sweet little baby boy had possibly been getting allergic reactions from everything I had thought was safe to use.
My “fragrance” now, my “candles” “makeup” and “products” are 100% pure essential oils and they smell amazing, have emotional and health benefits but are also safe for myself and my family which is the most important thing. If a product has its listed ingredients and it says "fragrance" it’s just an immediate No for me. In my opinion, if a company is not willing to be compliant and list all of their ingredients for you on their label, they are not a company you can trust in my eyes.
This is a huge reason why I chose to branch out and start my wellness account https://www.instagram.com/hereforthewellness/?hl=en so I can share more about why I love
Young Living- they are compliant, have nothing to hide and list in real words what simple and natural ingredients they are using in their products. Some people purchase all their household and personal products from all over the place which can be a hassle. To have found a company I can order everything from personal care, baby care, cleaning, and even food from? It’s not only convenient but extremely calming to know that I can trust a company and feel safe using these items in our everyday lifestyle.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this post- it is very near and dear to my heart and big part of our journey to a toxic free household. Let me know if you have any questions or topics you would like me to cover next.
